Cystitis pain symptoms and healing

Cystitis: A painful condition

Cystitis is a very underrated illness. When someone mentions that they suffer with this condition, they never seem to be taken seriously. But believe me, it can be absolutely excruciating. The first sign that something is wrong is a feeling of discomfort when you pass water. It can feel "heavy" and slightly uncomfortable. If you don't take action quickly enough, then the symptoms will suddenly get worse and you will find yourself in agony, sitting on a toilet trying to pee. The feeling that you get is that you want to desperately go to the toilet, but nothing seems to be coming out. And in a lot of cases you will notice that, when you wipe yourself, there will be blood on the tissue. Fever, stomach cramps, and terrific pain down below can quickly follow.

So What Is Cystitis?

Cystitis is a urinary tract infection (UTI). Most of these infections are caused by E.coli, though luckily not the deadly strain that you find in food. In the case of cystitis, bacteria cling to the bladder wall and reproduce. This can happen for a number of reasons, including not cleaning yourself properly when going to the toilet, and wiping yourself the wrong way (from back to front instead of front to back). A lot of women wipe incorrectly without realising that they are in fact taking bacteria from their back passage to the bladder opening. Another common cause is not drinking enough water or liquids. When we drink, it flushes the stale water out, and stops the bacteria from clinging to the bladder wall. But if it has already taken hold, then you will start to notice these symptoms.

The Symptoms of Cystitis:

  • A stinging or burning sensation when you pass water
  • The need to pass water more often
  • Feeling you want to pass water urgently, but find that you only pass little or no water
  • Cloudy or dark colored urine
  • Blood in the urine
  • Pain in your lower back or tummy
  • Feeling generally unwell
  • Cold shivers when you pass urine

Diagnosing your cystitis

Most cases of cystitis clear up on their own within 24 hours. If you still feel unwell after that then you should see your doctor, especially if any of the following are true:

  • Your symptoms haven't improved.
  • You have blood in your urine for a prolonged amount of time. A small amount is common, but if it carries on then check it out.
  • You are pregnant.
  • You are over 65.
  • You have a high temperature, or are sick and/or vomiting.
  • You have severe pain, especially in your back.
  • You have have a history of kidney stones or other kidney problems.
  • You have had recurring cystitis.
  • You have diabetes.

Cystitis isn't just a woman's problem. If a man gets it, it could be caused by an enlarged prostate gland. And children should always see their doctor. A urine test will be taken to find out exactly what is going on.

A course of antibiotics will be given to clear this up if it doesn't go away on its own.

A hot water bottle can help with Cystitis pain.

A hot water bottle can help with Cystitis pain.

Self-Help Remedies

Taking a painkiller will get rid of the initial discomfort. Paracetamol is probably one of the fastest to work. Another good idea is to try to make your urine less acidic. Bicarbonate of soda dissolved in a glass of water is good, and potassium citrate is another. These can be obtained from your chemist. Make sure you drink a lot of water, but remember not to drink too much. Water can affect the chemical balance in your body, and if taken too much, can be dangerous.

Cranberry Juice

Cranberry juice is thought to be one of the best self help things that you can use to treat cystitis. For a long time, people believed that it would get rid of urinary tract infections. Evidently the reasoning behind this idea was that the cranberry would stop the little 'hooks' bacteria use to attach to your bladder wall. But this is not the case. Cranberry can help stop cystitis, and if taken regularly before the trouble starts, it will prevent the bacteria from staying in your bladder. But if the bacteria is already there, cranberry can only help alleviate the symptoms, not actually remove the bacteria. The door is open on this subject; some doctors believe it can't remove it, and others say it does! At any rate, it seems as though the cranberry can at least remove the terrible waves of pain and discomfort caused by cystitis.

Blackcurrant Juice

Now, before I discuss blackcurrant juice, I have to tell you a true story that got me writing about this subject. A few months ago, I had a bad case of cystitis. I had no idea what it was that I had, or how to get rid of it. I was in so much pain I didn't know what to do with myself. I did all the wrong things. For example, I didn't drink any water because I presumed the pain was caused by me wanting to pass urine, and couldn't understand why I couldn't go. Eventually I drank a lot of water, and after about five hours, the symptoms started to go away.

The most recent attack was today. I realised straight away what it was, and started to drink lots of water. Even though it helped a bit, I was still in a lot of pain. Then I remembered the cranberry juice. Unfortunately I didn't have any on hand, but did discover some blackcurrant herbal tea. I thought, "What the heck, I will give it a go," and much to my surprise and great delight, after one cup of blackcurrant tea, my bladder started working again properly, and the pain went away! I can't say it has gone completely just yet, but the relief is amazing. So I looked it up on the Internet, and this is what I found:

Blackcurrants are high in health promoting compounds called proanthocyanidins. These successfully interfere with the nasty bacteria that causes cystitis. Blackcurrants have many more of these compounds than cranberries, and even better, they have even more useful chemicals called catechins and anthocyanins, which fight infection; these are also what give them their deep color. Blackcurrants simultaneously clean your bladder and hydrate your whole body. They flush the toxins out much quicker, and this is what makes them so effective.

All I know is that after taking blackcurrant, my bladder started to work again properly, and the pain was a lot less. I won't lie; I was still uncomfortable for a few hours, but that initial crushing pain in my bladder that made me unable to stay still or sit down, was gone. So if you want a very effective, very quick solution to cystitis, then I recommend grabbing a glass of blackcurrant. It certainly helped me.

Medications

There are also many over the counter cystitis satchets or tablets that can help to clear your bladder and bring back the balance. They help stop the acidic burning, and return the water back to normal. Hopefully this will help your bladder to remove the bacteria naturally. These medications especially help if you take them as soon as the symptoms start. It is well worth buying some of these, especially the satchets of powder that you mix with water as they start to work very quickly. You may never need them, but it's a good idea to keep them just in case.

Great info about an awful complaint which I've suffered from for many years in the U.K. and even now we live in Spain with warmer climate I've reached my 60's and I'm still having recurring attacks. When younger they called it Honeymoon cystitis now it's blamed on being older, an yes we do still enjoy a love life lol. No matter how careful I am regarding personal hygiene my problem has always been not drinking enough and now in a much hotter climate it's become an issue again, suffering at this very moment it's not nice, if I drink much more I will have to sit all day in the bathroom! Every glass of drink I pray it will take the nagging pain away, I do have an emergency packet of an antibiotic but I like to try and beat it naturally at first but if I still have it tomorrow, that will be my third day, I will take it not that it will be a miracle cure I will still have to keep drinking. Hope you are keeping free of it now.

Hi Maria, sorry to hear you are suffering, if you feel its getting worse then antibiotics should help, don't worry, you won't even know you are taking them, they don't have any side effects, well not usually, and then it should clear up within a couple of days, it may well be some other problem so a trip to the GP is always the best way to go, he or she will be able to give you the best meds, good luck, and thanks for reading, nell

You are right on target w/this advice. I typically had this problem about twice a year for several years running. But I learned how to prevent it, and WATER is key. I also always keep Azo and Cystex Plus in my Rx cabinet all the time (I only use the Cystex IF I develop a problem because I do not want to overdo the antibacterial effect), and cranberry juice is a staple for me. I only take about 4 0z every AM, and it seems to help keep the urinary tract clear. BTW, I am totally impressed with your HUB work!

Hi Chewy, that must have been awful! it is such a painful thing to have, I do think most people believe its just a small thing, but that's just not true. The best thing is to just keep drinking, water, blackcurrant and anything that will flush it through, glad you are okay, nell

Great article. I've only had it once or twice and that was enough! It can be so very painful. It can also occur in women shortly after being sexual active and that is something many young girls are not aware of. Some doctors recommend using the restroom shortly after to flush out bacteria.

I had my first UTI (cystitis) about 7 years ago and the pain got so bad I passed out. At that time I had never experienced a pain quite that intense and it was awful. I ended up on antibiotics and they helped clear it up. Later when I was pregnant I actually had to go on a low dose antibiotic because I kept getting UTIs. I have not had one since I had my kids though, thank goodness!

Hi, I've enjoyed reading your Hub, it gives a balanced perspective both on the scientific aspects of cystitis and on helpful natural treatments. In my practice I've found cystitis to be such a re-current problem, with most sufferers contracting it over and over again that I find it useful to look at the emotional and psychological patterns when the condition is associated with sexual inter-course. There are several homeopathic remedies that can be of assistance too.

Kitty Fields from Summerland on June 13, 2011:

Hi, Nell. I just recently found out that I have what's called Interstitial Cystitis...which means my bladder has holes in the inner lining and that acidic foods irritate my bladder to where I feel as though I have a bladder infection every day if I don't watch what I eat and drink! I have had many infections leading up to the diagnosis of IC. This is a very useful hub. It should be noted that some women who think they are getting chronic infections may in fact have IC...especially if they feel cranberry juice does not help but in fact irritates them even more. Thanks so much for revealing the truth about this illness...it is a severely painful one...both bacterial and IC!

Liz Elias from Oakley, CA on June 09, 2011:

Hi, Nell..

Great explanation... I've had it a few times in my middle-age years...and come to find out that being on birth-control pills can predispose you to the condition!! How annoying!

There is also another cause...about which I probably cannot go into great detail due to HP rules of decorum...let me just say, "How embarassing is it, after 20 years of marriage, to have the doctor write "honeymoon cystitis" on your chart??!!"

You made excellent points about the cranberry juice. I'd not heard of using black currant...that is good to know. In addition to the cranberry, a friend of mine who was into holistic care and prevention also said to add yogurt, and a daily dose of a capsule of Goldenseal herb. (Don't take too much of that--it can be laxative) But you know what?? The combination of those 3 things alleviated the symptoms WAY faster than the prescribed antibiotic from the doc! (Still took it for the cure, but it doesn't do much for the symptoms early on!) However, it is worth noting that the antibiotic may kill off beneficial "bugs" which is where the yogurt comes into play.

Voted up & useful!

Hi, beth, I should imagine that it has a higher content of acid, and acid is the one thing that will 'pinch' you, as my mother used to say! lol she couldn't drink it either, especially if you are prone to cystitis it's best to keep off it, unfortunately, thanks again nell

Hi, cangetthere, yes warm water is a good thing to drink, it can also help with flushing out toxins, and I agree about the sugar, as that can cause more problems, thanks again nell

Pauline from New Zealand on June 07, 2011:

hi Nell,

My health goes down hill from lack of water.Mainly I forget to drink just get too busy.I find drinking warm water clears things up quickly.Cranberry is good one but you have to find quality juice not filled with sugar. You hub is very useful and the best I have seen on the subject.Great stuff.

Great hub, as usual Nell, always informative and well done. Cranberry juice is a good one for this as mentioned, tastes great too.

agusfanani from Indonesia on June 06, 2011:

A useful hub. People in where I live also use kidney tea (Orthosiphon stamineus Benth) to cure this illness.

Linda Crampton from British Columbia, Canada on June 06, 2011:

Thank you for a very useful and important hub. Although I knew about the use of cranberry juice for cystitis, I didn't know that blackcurrant juice helped too.

Beth Perry from Tennesee on June 06, 2011:

Very informative!

My daughter and I both develop cystitis if we drink apple juice. I have often wondered why this is. Apple Juice is in fact the only drink or food item I know for certainty that does this to us, and eating apples or drinking apple cider doesn't, just the darned juice.

Audrey Kirchner from Washington on June 06, 2011:

Great tips on a horrible problem!

Very helpful suggestions Nell. Haven't had this problem for ages but when I did I used the baking soda in a glass of water trick which worked for me.

Xavier Nathan from Isle of Man on June 06, 2011:

Excellent hub with on the button practical advice that I have seen work with people who suffer from this condition. Using a lubricant before making love is also another way for women to avoid the condition.

As you know I believe that our physical symptoms are a reflection of underlying emotional problems. In my experience of treating people with this condition in my private practice I have found that in almost every case anxiety was the root cause and it was also coupled with the client's fear of letting go of old ideas and being fed up with their own inability to move on.

Ruby Jean Richert from Southern Illinois on June 06, 2011:

Very important hub Nell. I knew about the Cranberry juice, but not the Blackcurrant. I've never had this problem, but i know people who do. I will pass this info. on. Thank you.

CASE1WORKER from UNITED KINGDOM on June 06, 2011:

nell- good idea to highlight this- may i say that firstly this could be a killer! I suferred a bad attack in my twenties that had me in hospital with intravenous anti biotics and a massively raised temperature- every time i closed my eyes I was watching the charge of the light brigade in full glorious technicolour. I would advise anyone to drink and drink and drink and if not cleared upwithin 36 hours you must have anti biotics- i was saved owing to wonderful medical staff in Eniskillen, others have not been so lucky.

Carolee Samuda from Jamaica on June 06, 2011:

Hi Nell, you have done it again. Your hubs are so interesting and informative.

I am familiar with the condition, not by experience, but I never knew about the simple methods you mentioned to help alleviate the symptoms.

Thank you!

lilyfly on June 06, 2011:
